Mosaic Majesty

I purchased a bag of these wood tile bracelets with little images of saints on them at a yard sale for a dollar. I loved the imagery but had no idea what to do with them. They actually hung around the studio for a year until inspiration struck! Tiles! They look like tiles! And thus began the inspiration for this piece! I began with the large Divine Antiquity shrine kito from Retro Cafe.

After disassembling the bracelets, I arranged the pieces until I liked what I saw.

The shrine pieces were gessoed , then painted purple. Dylusions ink sprays were used to give a mottled effect.


Next, the tiles along with the cross cut-out , the Relics & Artifacts medallion, and some leftover masonite bits from other Retro Cafe kits, were glued in place using E6000. More glue was used between the tiles and they were “grouted” with beads.

Patina Effect paste was used on the medallion, the cross, and the other masonite bits to add a pop of color.
The other shrine pieces were embossed using stamps from Sandra Evertson’s Muse collection with turquoise embossing powder and a clear ink stamp pad. This was toned down using Americana gel stain in Oak.

For the inset, I used gold embossed wrapping paper ( adhered with an Uhu Stic) which was washed with turquoise paint. The shrine was then assembled.

For the doll: I stamped onto muslin with another image from the Muse collection and an archival ink pad . Her lips and hair were embroidered and she was given a little color using Gelatos.

A 2nd piece of muslin was cut for the back and the piece was stitched together and stuffed with fiberfill and rice. A piece of sari fabric and a bit of vintage lace were fashioned into her dress. A touch of fabric glue and a sprinkle of gold glitter- then she was done!
